7 Book Series to Read After Reading a Court of Thorns and Roses

The reading slump after reading the A Court of Thorns and Roses series hit me hard. On the one hand I couldn’t stop reading and on the other hand I felt bored by my normal romance or historical fiction books. I don’t know about you but after I read ACOTAR I felt like I left this magical world. ACOTAR was really when I got into reading fantasy, and it has opened a whole new world of reading to me. I was an avid reader growing up but during college I got busy and just didn’t spend as much time reading. I’ve read the whole ACOTAR series two times, and I must say each time gets better. These books will help you get out of the post ACOTAR reading slump and get back into reading!

Fourth Wing

Violet Sorrengail is weak, at least in body. She has brittle bones and was supposed to be a scribe, but her mother has different plans for her. Her mother, the legendary General Sorrengail demands that she try to become one of the Navarre dragon riders. On Violet’s quest to stay alive at the brutal Basgiath college she does whatever it takes to survive. Dragons hate weakness, and to be worthy to bond with a dragon you have to be worthy. Along with just trying to survive, she must make sure she doesn’t get murdered by the other cadets who hate her, like Xaden Riorsen.

This book has everything from enemies to lovers, amazing supporting characters, political intrigue, all the suspense, dragons, and so many secrets. I cannot recommend this book enough. I genuinely think about this book series almost every day.

A House of Earth and Blood

This book is the first installment in the Crescent City series and the third series in the Sarah J. Maas universe. If you like ACOTAR, you will love this book. A House of Earth and Blood follows Bryce Quinlan, a party girl who lived a perfect life until a demon murdered her best friend. She will do anything to find out who murdered her best friend and get them behind bars. Hunt Athalar, a fallen angel enslaved to the archangels is offered a sweet deal: help Bryce find the murderer and he will be free.

This book is so good. I love Bryce, she’s a strong FMC who is tough-as-nails and reminds you that it’s okay to not be okay. This book has page-turning romance, great supporting characters, and all the suspense.

Promised In Fire

Adara is a magically impotent earth fae until she’s not. She is suddenly thrust into a world that she has no idea what to make of. This story features dragons, excellent worldbuilding, slow-burn romance, enemies to lovers, and great character building. If you like Fourth Wing, you might love this series. It has three books in the series, and it is a fully completed series. This is also free on Kindle Unlimited, currently!

Divine Rivals

Eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow, a journalist at the Oath Gazette knows two things: Roman Kitt is trying to win the columnist position at the Gazette to beat her and there’s more to this war between the gods than meets the eye. This book is fast-paced and takes you into the heart of war between the gods.

I absolutely loved reading this book. It pulled me in immediately and I absolutely fell in love with the characters. This book features enemies to lovers, war, suspense, great worldbuilding, and politics. The series by Rebecca Ross is fully completed and worth the read.

Throne of Glass

Calaena Sardothian, a ruthless assassin, is summoned to the castle for a competition to become the king’s champion. Calaena’s opponents start slowly dying one by one, and Calaena knows that something evil is lurking in the castle.

I can’t recommend this book enough! This is Sarah J. Maas’s debut novel that was released in 2012. This book has all the action, suspense, mystery, romance, and AMAZING worldbuilding. Every single book in this book series is worth reading. If you haven’t read it, you’re in for a treat.

Oraya is determined to survive in a world that is out to kill her. Oraya, the adopted daughter of the Nightborn vampire king enters the legendary Kejari competition held by the goddess of death. Oraya will do anything to survive this competition, but she finds that the competition offers her more than she bargained for. Shadow and Bone

Alina Starkov, an ordinary mapmaker, is pulled from her life in Ravka to join the famed Grisha when it is found out that she has magic that the king desperately needs. Alina suddenly has an entire kingdom depending on her to save them from the Shadow fold, and a kingdom pulling her in different directions. This book is so good. It is one of my favorite fantasy books I’ve read so far. It features political intrigue, great worldbuilding, and love triangles.

  1. You have convinced me to buy A Court of Thorns and Roses! I’m excited! Are there any of these other books/series in particular that you would recommend would probably be good listening to as an audiobook? Thanks for the post!

    1. You will not be disappointed!! I would say that some good books that are great audiobooks would be The Nightingale and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. For nonfiction, I listen to all of them as audiobooks! I love Outlive by Peter Attia, The Simple Path to Wealth, and Intuitive Eating!
